A network switch is a device that connects multiple devices on a computer network using packet switching to forward data based on MAC addresses at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Some switches also operate at the network layer (layer 3) and are known as layer-3 or multilayer switches. The most common type of network switch is for Ethernet. The first MAC Bridge was invented in 1983 by Mark Kempf, leading to the development of various switching products and further standardization by IEEE. Unlike repeater hubs, network switches learn the addresses of connected devices and forward data only to the intended recipient’s port, reducing collision domains.
Witches primarily act as connection points for hosts at the network edge. In hierarchical internetworking models, switches also connect edge switches deeper within the network.
Commercial switches include integrated or modular interfaces for various network types like Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and 802.11. While layer-2 functions manage bandwidth within a single technology, interconnecting different technologies, such as Ethernet and T oken Ring, is more easily achieved at layer 3 or through routing, with layer 3 devices typically called routers.
For thorough network performance and security analysis, switches can be placed between WAN routers to host analytical modules. Some vendors offer firewall, intrusion detection, and performance analysis modules that attach to switch ports, often in combined forms.
Port mirroring allows switches to create duplicates of data for external devices, such as intrusion detection systems. Modern switches may implement power over Ethernet (PoE), allowing devices like VoIP phones to operate without separate power supplies. Since switches can be connected to uninterruptible power supplies, attached devices can continue functioning even during power outages. In 1989 and 1990, Kalpana introduced the first multiport Ethernet switch, the seven port EtherSwitch.
